In the center of the plot is a man who finds himself on a desert island. To escape, he built a raft, but the red turtle in every way prevents him from leaving the island. Feeling anger and despair, the man leaves her lying on the inverted shore. She seems to have died, however, after a few nights she mysteriously turns to a young girl. They begin to live on the island together, leading a primitive life, and soon they have a son. A child already becomes a teenager when a tsunami arrives on the island, destroying coastal bamboo groves. After a storm, a young man searches for his parents, but finds only a wounded mother. He took his father to the sea, but his son manages to save him. The family reunites and continues to live on the island.
The only thing reminiscent of civilization is a glass bottle thrown ashore by the waves. Having matured, the young man decides to leave the island by swimming, along with turtles. Parents let him go. Their old age on the island is shown, then the death of the protagonist, occurring in a dream. The woman again turns into a big red turtle and swims away.
