Asterix in America is a 1994 German animated comic based on the comic book The Great Crossing of the Asterix series.
Julius Caesar plans to kidnap the Druid Miraculix, who with his potion represents the only chance for the survival of the Asterix village. Caesar has Lucullus take him deep into the Atlantic Ocean by ship and throw him down with a catapult to “throw him over the glass into nothingness”. Asterix and Obelix follow the Romans and find that the earth is not a disk , but that there is still a land.
They land in their search for Miraculix Indians who hold the Druid. After initial dispute, both sides make friends. The further course of action determines the competition between the Druid and the Indian shaman, who envies the Gaul his arts. After a kidnapping of Miraculix and his liberation by his friends, the Gauls return to their village. This was attacked by the Romans and the Gauls deported to the nearest garrison.
From the bard Troubadix, whom the Romans left behind in the village for their annoying sounds, Asterix, Obelix and Miraculix learn about the robbery and free their friends. The story ends with a happy party.
The film was produced from 1991 to 1994 under the direction of Gerhard Hahn in Germany, after all previous Asterix films were made in France. The two main characters, Asterix and Obelix, are spoken in the German version by Peer Augustinski and Ottfried Fischer . The 2003 DVD also includes a soundtrack with Erkan and Stefan as the voice actor of Asterix and Obelix included.
In terms of production technology, Asterix uses traditional cel animation in America , with one of the last newly built multiplan cameras used for complex scenes . In addition, the film also contains combinations of animated (2D) figures on paper with computer-generated 3D objects (ships, waves). For the first time, the mental ray rendering software was used extensively in this film, providing seamless integration of the drawn and calculated image elements.
In Germany, the film saw 1,602,000 moviegoers. [1]
